Feb 2001: Well, I finally did it ...

After saving and planning for about 4 years, I was able to get this '01 BlaZeR2. I had had my eye on these trucks since early 98 when I first saw one in the HRL Laboratories parking lot in Malibu, CA, where I was working at the time. After some of their not so great design choices with the S-series trucks throughout the years, I really think GM has gotten it right with the ZR2s ... ofcourse I am ignoring the ZR2 Tracker fiasco :)
In case you are not familiar with the Chevy ZR2 factory RPO, this is the list of mods that it includes in addition to the normal 4x4 2-door Blazer LS package:
  • Full ladder-type frame with modified suspension mounting points, providing:
    • 3.9 inches wider than the regular S-10s
    • 3 inch suspension height increase
  • Enhanced front (7.25" ring gear) and rear (8.5" ring gear) axles with 3.73:1 rear-axle ratio
  • Larger wheel and axle bearings
  • 31x10.5R-15 LT/C black wall off-road tires (BFG A/Ts on pickups and BFG Long Trails on BlaZeR2)
  • 46mm gas pressurized Bilstein Monotube shocks
  • Rear axle track bar on pickups, rear sway bar on BlaZeR2s
  • Wheel flares (black on S-10 pickups and BlaZeR2 / body-color on Sonoma pickups)
  • 36mm (early model) / 28mm (late model) front anti-sway bar
  • Skid plates

I have a TON of plans in mind with 2 major obstacles: time + $$$ ... so as soon as I am able to find enough of both, I will be expanding the lists above!!! For now, click on the links to see what I have done. Also, don't forget to check out the links at the end to see what others have done. Also, if you are at all interested in ZR2s or have any questions, definitly check out www.zr2.com.

From the book of ZR2.COM, Chapter 1:

And it came to pass that God created all things, and on the seventh day, he rested. And as he was resting he thought... "I wish I could go wheeling..." and he got up, and created ZR2. And behold he was well pleased. And he went out into the mountains and all the places of the world that few dared to tread. And he was smitten by poor front articualtion, and he was sore afraid. And he cursed the ZR2 with lack of aftermarket support and weak ass seat handles. And so it has been.

And it came to pass that on the eighth day, God said, "Who will go down, and wheel the earth?" And there arose a fearsome and thunderous noise. And Lucifer said "Here I am, send me. And mine shall be the glory." And God asked "What will you be taking on the trail?" Then there arose another great and terrible sound, and Lucifer turned very tightly around the corner in his Black TJ sport with the Rubicon express longarm kit and 37" MTRs. And God was not well pleased. He banished Lucifer and the third of the host of heaven to a dreadful and inhospitable terrain called Upper Helldorado.

And there was great rejoicing as the host of heaven set forth upon the earth in their Zs. And God said unto them "go forth into the paragon adventure park, and into the badlands, and into most of moab. But taste not of the forbidden fruit of solid front axles, that grow from the tree of Jeep in Helldorado."

And lucifer and all the hosts of Helldorado set forth on the world, and intermixed with the Zs and the host of heaven. And God was not well pleased. And it came to pass that God smote down uppon the Zs with a great and terrible curse. "And in the 30th month and the 30th thousand mile, their ball joints shall fail, and their CV joints shall click. And forever shall they lift a front tire into the air on rough terrain."
